There is something beautiful about a friend inviting you to a birthday party and already having what you need to put together something thoughtful for them.
A dedicated gift closet, or even just a designated space, is one of the simplest systems we build for clients here in Dallas. It ties back to everything we believe at Getting It Done Organizing: being organized and prepared sets you up to show up well, as a friend, spouse, mother, or dinner guest, whatever the moment calls for. These are not big things, but they are intentional ones, and intentional things have a way of changing how you move through life.
A great gift area does two different jobs:
- Keeping a few gifts on hand for upcoming events
- Having an organized wrap station that makes wrapping a breeze
What belongs in your gift area
Gifts on hand
- Kids’ gifts, sorted loosely by age range
- Hostess gifts for a dinner party or last-minute invite
- Cards for any occasion, plus a few blank ones
- A running list of what is inside (in your iPhone Notes app), so restocking is simple
Heading into holiday party season, hostess gifts are where this really shines. Everyone brings wine, so bring something more thoughtful. We love consumable gifts because they get enjoyed and never add clutter to someone else’s home. A few favorites:
- A dinner basket with pasta, a good sauce, and a nice dish towel
- A beautiful brie wheel and a fresh pear
- Fresh cookies or cupcakes for the host to enjoy the day after the party
Keep a few small baskets on hand, pick up everything else at the grocery store, and build a dinner basket, snack basket, or charcuterie basket in minutes. The presentation is what makes it special.
Wrap station
- Wrapping paper, ribbon, tissue paper, and gift bags, organized so you can see what you have
- Tags, tape, and scissors, kept with the wrap
- Crinkle paper and clear cellophane for finishing gift baskets
We say closet because we turned one client’s closet under the stairs into something useful, and honestly, kind of amazing. But you do not need an actual closet for this to work. An Elfa Gift Wrap Cart from The Container Store does the job fabulously, or this Sunncate Wrapping Paper Storage Cart Station on Amazon. Roll it out when you need it, and roll it back into a closet or corner when you do not.
Another go-to is the Elfa Utility Wire Gift Rack. It mounts on the back of any door, so it does not eat into shelf or floor space, and it keeps wrap, ribbon, and bags visible and within reach.
Reuse what is still good (within reason)
Gift bags can run six or seven dollars at some stores, so not every one needs to be bought new. If you receive a gift in a bag that is still in good shape, save it. It keeps your wrap station stocked between shopping trips, and no one has ever noticed a gift bag has been used before.
Just be selective. We have seen homes with hundreds of saved gift bags, and at that point they become clutter. Keep only the ones in great condition, and only as many as you will realistically use.
The payoff
A gift closet is not about having more stuff. It is about spending less, in every sense: less money on gifts grabbed in a hurry, less time before you walk out the door, and less mental energy spent tracking what you have and what you still need.
It also makes you a better gift giver. With gifts ready and your wrap station stocked, saying yes to a last-minute invite is easy. Build the system once, and every occasion gets a little easier.
