It’s already back-to-school time! If keeping your kids organized during the year is a struggle, this post details my simple yet very effective system to help them keep important papers in order without the “binder rot.”

The Game-Changing Tool: The Open-Top File Box
This open-top file box will change your and your kid’s life! I recommend that every child, ADHD or no ADHD, start using one in middle school.
- Choose Your Box: We love this simple, durable option from The Container Store. It works for any age or gender. However, if your child is motivated by style, there are plenty of options on Amazon, like gingham patterns or rose gold sets.
- Add Hanging Folders: You’ll want to get some hanging folders for the inside. You can go basic with simple gray folders from The Container Store or let their personality shine with fun prints. You can even buy assorted color folders and assign a specific color to each child.
Pro Tip: It is more important for the box to be functional than “Pinterest perfect.” Do teenage boys really care?

Setting Up the System
- Label with Longevity in Mind: Label each file with generic subjects so you can use the same files year after year. Think “Math” instead of “Algebra,” or “History” rather than “American History.” We used our label maker (because how could we not!), but a Sharpie works just fine, too.
- The “Post-Unit” Habit: Using the new file box is easy now that you’ve set your student up for a successful year! After each unit, chapter, or test, your student simply drops their notes, quizzes, study guides, and flashcards into the appropriate file.
Why It Works
This system ensures your child is prepared for mid-terms and finals without having to lug around a heavy binder with papers falling out. It keeps the backpack light and ensures nothing important is lost.
This organizing tip can take your child all the way through college! Sometimes the simplest things work the best. A paper system like this prevents that mad-dash scramble when it’s crunch time.
Be Patient, New Systems Take Time
I made a box like this for my son a few years ago. Initially, he totally shunned the box (and me!). I simply left it in his room on the floor by his desk.
One day, while preparing to give a talk on organizing, I went to borrow the empty box to show other moms. Surprisingly, I found the box was full of papers! I was so excited but dared not mention it to him. I was quietly happy, knowing my tips and tricks were sinking in. I am convinced it was the lack of nagging that finally worked. He is still using that same system today as he begins his Senior year!
Bonus Tip for Parents
Buy a second box for yourself to keep the family’s school logistics in order! Make a file folder for each child. When they have documents for you to read or sign, they put them in their designated folder as soon as they get home. This keeps your counters clear and your family on track.
