If you’ve ever experienced the sharp, soul-crushing pain of stepping on a stray LEGO brick in the middle of the night, you know that LEGOs are in a league of their own when it comes to kid-related clutter. We love that these tiny bricks spark so much creativity in our kids, but without a system, they can quickly turn a playroom into a “toy-nado” zone.
At Getting it Done Organizing, we believe your home should serve your family, not the other way around. Here is how we manage the madness and move from LEGO chaos to calm.

Our Pro-Tips for Managing LEGO Pieces
You don’t need a complicated system to keep your bricks under control. In fact, simpler is almost always better when it comes to kids. Here is our go-to strategy:
- Large, Clear Tubs: Get one or two large, clear plastic tubs with lids. Visibility is key—if kids can’t see what’s inside, they’ll dump the whole thing out to find what they need. These tubs should fit easily on your shelves, under a bed, or in your designated storage space.
- Categorize the Special Pieces: Designate a few smaller, matching tubs for specialty categories that always seem to get lost at the bottom of the big bin. We recommend separate bins for:
- LEGO people and animals
- “Special” parts
- Weapons and accessories
- The Display Rule: Only display what you actually have room for. Everything else goes into the tubs.
- Think Vertically: If your child is a prolific builder, consider adding a bookcase or some floating shelves. Giving their masterpieces a “home” off the floor is a total game-changer for the room’s flow.
- Make Room for New: Sometimes kids have to choose to break down an old set to make room for a new creation. Once a set has been enjoyed and then broken down, deposit those bricks back into the general bins for free-building.
- Give Back with LEGO RePlay: If your kids have outgrown their collection, don’t let it gather dust! Use LEGO RePlay to print a free shipping label and donate your bricks to children’s nonprofits. It’s a great way to declutter while doing good.

What We Don’t Recommend (and Why)
In our experience, there are a few common “organizing” mistakes that actually make more work for you in the long run:
- Sorting by Set: It’s fun to build a kit for the first time, but storing bricks in individual bags with instructions often hinders a child’s imagination. Plus, let’s be honest: what are the chances you’ll actually keep every single tiny piece together? Let them mix and match!
- Sorting by Color: We’ll say it: Life is just too short for this. It looks beautiful on Pinterest for about five minutes, but unless you have a professional organizer living in your playroom, it’s nearly impossible for a child to maintain.
- Specialty “LEGO Furniture”: Many storage boxes made specifically for LEGOs actually over-complicate things. They often have too many small compartments that make it harder to find the piece you’re looking for. Stick to simple, clear bins.

Encouraging Creativity: Fun Ideas for Your Kids
Once the bricks are organized, the real fun begins! Here are a few ways we keep our kids engaged with their collection:
- Promote “Free-Building”: Now that they have access to all those miscellaneous pieces, encourage them to build from their own imagination.
- The LEGO Magazine: You can subscribe to the free LEGO magazine! It’s packed with games, puzzles, and building prompts.
- Get Featured: The magazine has a “Cool Creations” section where you can submit a photo of your child with their masterpiece. They might even see themselves in print!
- LEGO Books: There are tons of books with independent building ideas to motivate kids.
- LEGO Challenges: Search for a “LEGO Challenge Calendar” (we love the ones from Little Bins for Little Hands) to give them a new mini-goal for every day of the month.
Let Us “Get it Done” for You
As a team of moms who have lived through the “LEGO-pocalypse” ourselves, we know exactly how it feels to walk into a room and feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of toys. We’ve stepped on those pieces in the dark, and we’ve seen the frustration when a favorite minifig goes missing.
That’s why we’re so passionate about creating manageable playroom systems that actually work for real families. We don’t just organize for the “look”—we organize for the “reset.” We want to give you a space that can be cleaned up in 10 minutes, not two hours.
If your playroom is currently more “chaos” than “calm,” we’re here to help. [Click here to book a consultation] and let our team of experts help you reclaim your space!
